Category Overview

Overview

The Category Overview Insight Panel is one of the top five most-used insight panels among all of our customers. For most of us, the Category Overview is probably the type of interface most of us are familiar with, since it's a table, like an Excel spreadsheet. Unlike an Excel spreadsheet, you don't have to massage the data or spend a lot of time to get into your data on an intuitive and granular level. Its purpose is to provide you with a concise view of year-over-year performance of your items, rolled up by any of 24 possible categorization types you can set up with Avantalytics.

The display defaults to your first categorization type, and you can easily customize this panel by accessing options in the Settings Gear, which include several customizable metrics. We recommend that you try grouping multiple Insight Panels of this type on a customized dashboard view, where you have set different time periods or category types for each panel. This way, you can quickly arrive at business view, which allows you to measure results by item organization and/or time.

This insight is "aware" of the presence of the State Sales Heat Map if you have loaded one on your dashboard. When the two panels are present together, choices made through the Heat Map's Settings Gear will temporarily drive the results shown in this Insight Panel to save you time. Put simply, if you want to see category sales in Florida, just use a State Heat Map on the same view and click on the state of Florida - see what happens.

Running different reports is easy with Category Overview. Just a few clicks of the mouse can change many different parameters, and the panel refreshes effortlessly. The below video demonstrates how to do this:

As you can see, similar to our heat maps and graphs, the Category Overview and other tables are in Excel-format, showing some key data at a glance. The Insight Panel itself doesn't get very granular, but you can easily create a comprehensive report. Not only that, but you can schedule your reports to run automatically!
